Sezon Museum of Modern Art was established in Takanawa, Tokyo in 1962.
Since its move to Karuizawa in 1981, the museum has built up an international
collection of twentieth-century art. It focuses on three areas : works by modern masters,
a selection of contemporary art from abroad, and recent art of progressive Japanese artists.
The museum currently houses some 500 works of 120 artists such as Wassily Kandinsky,
Paul Klee, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, Magdalena Abakanowicz,
Anselm Kiefer, Francesco Clemente, Hisao Domoto, Keiji Usami, Shusaku Arakawa and
Kazumi Nakamura.
Every year, the museum shows three to four major exhibitions of modern and
contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming
international artists, and the series of exhibition <Art Today> started in 1986.
Its theme is to introduce remarkable artists and their works.
